Copying my favourite yoga trousers – a quick tutorial

My favourite trousers to wear at home are straight leg jersey trousers with a deep waistband from here.  But when I ripped them this week (puppy related incident!) £35 seemed a lot to spend on a new pair.  I decided to try to make them myself.  It took me a little while to work out how to do it, so I thought I’d share the process here.

I cut my ripped trousers apart at the seams, which gave me three pieces which looked like this –

Jersey trousers pieces

I cut them out (adding a seam allowance) from some black cotton jersey.  Two of each of the leg pieces, and one long rectangle for the waistband.  Then I sewed them together with my serger in this order:

  1. Sew backs to fronts at inside legs
  2. Sew these pieces together by stitching the whole crotch seam (waist edge to waist edge)
  3. Sew the outside leg seams
  4. Stitch the waistband together at the short edges to form a ring
  5. Fold the waistband in two lengthways, wrong sides together
  6. Pin the waistband to the waist edge of the trousers, all three raw edges together (the waistband is down over the trousers, see pic below) and sew

Finish by hemming.  I like to use a small zig zag on my sewing machine.

They’re ready for play!

  1. Nice! Thanks for the steps. I have a yoga pants pattern from a Sewing With Knits Craftsy course I took, but have not made them yet. Think I will print out your steps to have handy when I do tackle them.
